The Toyota Yaris that was launched in the market as a replacement model for the Toyota Echo nameplate has gone a long way since its entry into the sub compact passenger cars category. It is a three or four door family coupe or family sedan. The models are designed to accommodate five adult passengers. This model is known for its high level of refinement, sophistication and its smooth driving features. The best part about this model is its affordability factor, along with excellent fuel efficiency. This year, Yaris is available in four-door Sedan and three-door Liftback models. Both the body styles are equipped with a number of standard and optional features for the interior as well as exterior segments. There is only one engine configuration for all the models. It is the 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i). This engine gives 106 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 103 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 RPM. There are two different types of transmission for the 2008 Toyota Yaris models, such as:
- 5-speed manual overdrive
- 4-speed electronically controlled automatic overdrive (ECT)
While the first one is standard for all models, the other one comes as an optional feature. The automatic transmission features uphill and downhill shift logic to reduce gear "hunting". It helps in smooth driving, even while driving in the hills. Both the transmissions give excellent fuel economy. In fact, Yaris' fuel efficiency is the best amongst all subcompact cars. For the manual transmission models, the EPA fuel economy ratings are 29 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. While that for automatic transmission are 35mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The car Toyota Yaris is EPA-certified as an Ultra-Low Emission vehicle (ULEV II).
Transmissions along with its excellent fuel economy is just one of the features that makes the Toyota Yaris, one of the favorite amongst the subcompact car segment.
